The Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum (NASM) has the most extensive collection of aviation and space artifacts in the world and is committed to creating engaging and educational experiences for its many visitors. NASM is in need of a full time, temporary, senior museum exhibit designer to design manage several large exhibition projects for three years. The Museum is undergoing a major renovation and is redoing all of its exhibitions. You will be working at the downtown Museum with a dynamic group of designers, project managers, exhibit teams, and exhibit contractors to help the Museum reenvision its visitor experience.
Duties
Work with the contracted exhibit design firm to guide the conception of imaginative exhibit designs that meet the demanding criteria of originality, practicality, affordability, accessibility, ease of maintenance and production, and appropriate aesthetics;
Lead, participate, facilitate project team meetings, workshops, and activities related to, but not limited to exhibition design and fabrication, lighting design, multi-media development and implementation; and public relations graphic design and marketing;
Review drawings and submittal documents, measure artifacts, verify case layouts, and review specifications;
Oversee integration of design into all media products;
Track and report on design progress and communicate all aspects of assigned design projects with other NASM and Smithsonian organizations and projects;
Establish and maintain historical records to ensure maintenance for ongoing exhibits and public spaces for the life-cycle of 20 to 30 years;
Work with the project manager to ensure that the team meets design and fabrication milestones and completes the project on time and within budget;
Make informal and formal presentations to NASM and Smithsonian senior management.
Location
This job will be located at the National Air and Space Museum National Mall Building at 6th and Independence Avenue, SW, Washington, DC 20560, but you will be required to visit the Paul E. Garber Facility, 3904 Old Silver Hill Road, Suitland, MD 20746, and the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, 14390 Air and Space Parkway, Chantilly, VA 20151 for meetings, workshops, or to acquire information.
Government Furnished Equipment
You shall be provided a workstation with a computer and relevant software for performing the work.
Payment
You will submit invoices for completed work on a monthly basis. Invoices will include the quantity of worked hours and a brief description of the services provided. You are responsible for developing your own pricing information. You are requested to provide an hourly rate for the base period of 3 (three) years and 2 optional 6-month terms based on services rendered as Not to Exceed (NTE) 1860 hours per year for the base period of 3 years, and 930 per each 6-month term. The hourly rate invoiced will remain the same throughout the contract period, regardless of the type of work performed.

Requirements
Degree in a design-related field such as exhibition design, graphic design, architecture, industrial design, or interior design.
10 or more years experience in museum exhibition design
Ability to manage exhibit projects

Ability to work with a diverse group of people
CAD program skill, preferably Vectorworks
Adobe Creative Cloud knowledge
Microsoft Office Suite
