The California Academy of Sciences seeks an innovative and energetic Senior Exhibit Designer to join the Academy’s outstanding Exhibit Studio team. You’ll lead design efforts to produce engaging exhibitions and visitor experiences, and will collaborate with scientists, educators, artists, builders, technologists, and other internal and external partners. This position reports to the Senior Director of Exhibits and Architecture.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Serve as lead exhibit designer on assigned projects: envision, articulate, and advocate for creative design solutions that present scientific content in innovative and memorable ways to diverse
Collaborate and coordinate with exhibit content developers, project managers, graphic designers, media designers, and others on exhibit design, media and interactive design, fabrication, and
Develop sketches, models, and detailed design packages from concept through schematic to construction/fabrication
Collaborate with design and content teams to prepare design presentations for key project milestones (10%, 35%, 65%, Final Design).
Function as primary liaison with external/contract design resources as
Translate and communicate visually to a wide variety of people including fellow designers and exhibit builders in order to effectively execute the vision for an
Work with aquarium biologists and engineers to develop designs for live animal display habitats, containment, and life support
Develop design strategies that align with project schedules and budgets, evaluating and proposing alternatives as necessary to help solve budget or technical
Review and comment on shop drawings and visit fabrication facilities, as necessary, to ensure designs are understood and executed
Manage all design documents and maintain organized files for project records and distribution to team




Coordinate and facilitate meetings as necessary to ensure the continuing progress of the
Meet regularly with the Director of Exhibits to discuss design ideas and provide status of
Follow and contribute to the Academy’s exhibit development process and complete work in a timely manner to meet schedules and
Participate in professional development opportunities to stay informed of trends in the museum and design fields, learn from and share knowledge with colleagues, and build relevant
Follow all Academy safety regulations
Perform other duties as assigned


QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: A qualified candidate will have a combination of the following experience and/or equivalent education:


Bachelor’s degree (BS, BA) or equivalent from four-year college in architecture, design, or other related
8-10 or more years of design experience focused on developing and translating vision into high- quality guest or audience experiences in museums, entertainment, or similar
Exhibit design experience for natural history museums, aquariums, or
Experience developing highly interactive and/or technical museum exhibit
Strong track record of leading design for complex projects with diverse teams, tight deadlines, and marketing-driven grand openings or release



KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: The ideal candidate will possess a combination of the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:


Knowledge and ability to create, read, and understand design and architectural drawings and
Advanced knowledge of AutoDesk (CAD) and/or Vectorworks (CAD). Knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud and SketchUp or other 3D modeling tools strongly
Comfortable using Microsoft Office, Google Apps, and other collaboration tools to create, manipulate, and share documents, spreadsheets, and other digital
Knowledge of techniques to safely and effectively display valuable museum specimens and
Well versed in techniques for integrating lighting, interactivity, and media to create unique visitor
Ability to interact and work respectfully with a wide diversity of people and to build
Ability to manage work on several projects simultaneously and deliver the design of moderate to large projects within established timelines and
Ability to communicate with stakeholders and non-designers as well as other designers to effectively convey design ideas and concepts and direct the development of design
Ability to accept and incorporate feedback from colleagues and
Ability to create exhibit experiences that are intellectually and emotionally Exhibits should have a “fun” or “Wow!” factor that will drive attendance to the Academy.


LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups or individuals. Bilingual (spoken and/or written) in Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin, or other non-English language preferred.
