SUMMARY The Collections Manager is responsible for all aspects of personnel management for the Collections Department, which includes registrars, preparators, and vendors/contractors doing temporary work with the collections team. Acting in collaboration with Curatorial, Exhibits, Technology, Public and Private Events, Marketing, Security and Facilities teams, the Collections Manager provides management and oversight of the museum’s permanent collection and all objects in temporary custody. The Collections Manager is responsible for the development, implementation and maintenance of best practices, museum policies, and all other details related to safe handling, storage, packing, transport and tracking of all artifacts.
Will be responsible for ensuring best practices in registration that include exhibition planning, budgets, installation and deinstallation (including handling, care, display, safety, conservation and risk mitigation). Using leadership, expertise, professional judgement and transparency in the management and delegation of duties, they will contribute to an open and collaborative culture within the department and MoPOP at large.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED)

Responsible for supervision and management of the Collections staff in accordance with organization’s policies. Responsibilities include: hiring, training and working with employees; performance management; and planning, assigning, directing and doing work to maximize resources.
In collaboration with Curatorial staff, develop and implement policies and procedures for acquisitions, loans, and deaccessions
Consult with Curatorial staff and Exhibits staff on planning and development of new exhibitions.
Manage and maintain collection storage facilities (including environment and security) in cooperation with Facilities and Technology departments.
Supervise staff activities involving collection care, documentation, conservation and preservation, exhibition, and loans.
Oversee and help process artifacts, including condition reports and database tracking.
Develop and implement policies and procedures for proper storage, including environmental and pest-control monitoring.
Oversee and help pack, transport, and store artifacts from the collections.
Oversee purchasing and ordering of archival supplies.
Understand ReqLogic software program and oversee Collections staff member delegated to track purchasing.
Ensure proper procedures are in place for exhibition, loan, photography, and conservation of artifacts.
Work with Artistic Director to create and maintain annual departmental and project budgets
Act as courier or installer/deinstaller for loans from the collection- either to single borrowing institutions or in concert with MoPOP’s traveling exhibitions program.









Requirements QUALIFICATIONS (EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/CERTIFICATIONS)

Master’s Degree in Museum Studies or related field, and minimum 10-12 years related Collections experience with at least five years in a supervisory/management role; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience working with a wide variety of historical collections preferred, including digital audio/visual material.
Basic knowledge and understanding of museum exhibition design, development, execution, and maintenance.
Proven knowledge of collections management techniques including: storage, handling, packing, and environmental control.
Proven knowledge of basic tools used to pack, unpack, and move crates
Valid driver’s license
Knowledge of museum registration processes.
Demonstrated ability to develop and implement efficient and usable processes and policies.
Experience creating and tracking budgets.
Excellent computer skills and experience with database systems, including The Museum System (TMS).
Ability to work independently with strong attention to detail.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills required.
Proven ability to provide effective customer service for internal and external client groups.
Strong problem solving skills.
Must be detail-oriented, with strong organizational skills in order to manage a continuous workflow in a high volume, multi-tasking environment.
Demonstrated ability to manage a team of professionals and to work effectively in a collaborative team environment with a dynamic range of people.
