Do you have master carpentry skills and experience making crates? If so, The Cleveland Museum of Art is looking for you! CMA is searching for a Packing Specialist who will prepare and pack works of art for shipment and assist with unpacking incoming artwork.
Artwork is shipped to and from the museum and it is the responsibility of the Packing Specialist to ensure that art is packed securely and arrives undamaged. The Packing Specialst reports to the Registrar for Loans and will work closely with other Registrars, Art Handlers, Conservation, and Curators to collaborate and create custom fitted crates and use already made crates to ship art of all shapes and sizes.
Requirements
BA or BFA degree required; two to four years experience and/or training in basic carpentry, crate-making and art handling; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to use hands to operate, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or bend.
Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds. Must be able to safely handle fragile, cumbersome, and valuable objects. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision.
This individual must possess a valid driver’s license. Ability to read scaled, detail drawings or layouts and to work well under pressure to meet deadlines. Prior experience with power and manual woodworking tools, table and panel saws, hot glue gun, routers, jigs, nail guns, sanders, sprayers, scaffolds, forklift, and other heavy equipment required. Painting and carpentry skills also required. Basic understanding of art media and materials helpful.
Some travel is required. This position works Monday - Friday, 8am - 5pm.
