The Museum of Indian Arts and Culture (MIAC), Santa Fe, NM, seeks an experienced, knowledgeable registrar to oversee all logistics involved with the acquisition, lending and movement of works of art or material culture for the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture(MIAC), the Center for New Mexico Archaeology and the Laboratory of Anthropology. This position is central to collections management and documentation. MIAC has been at the forefront in adapting museum best practices to encompass Southwest indigenous concepts and values regarding the appropriate care and display of indigenous forms of art and material culture. An ideal candidate is versed in current practices in the museum field related to indigenous arts and culture and has experience collaborating with tribal communities. The incumbent disseminates information as needed to other departments, researchers and students in relation to exhibitions and acquisitions; assists in drafting collections policy and procedures; and acts as the collections auditor for all incoming and outgoing objects at MIAC. Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree in museum studies, history, archaeology, anthropology, art history or related humanities field and experience working with Native American art or material culture collections. Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s in museum studies, history, archaeology, anthropology, art history or related humanities field.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment. Pre-employment background investigation is required and is conditional pending results.
Working Conditions
Work takes place in an office setting, storage facility and exhibit areas and has extensive exposure to video display terminal and computer and telephone usage.
