The Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum (NASM) has the most extensive collection of aviation and space artifacts in the world and is committed to creating engaging and educational experiences for its many visitors. NASM is in need of full time, temporary, artifact mount-makers to assist in the fabrication of a wide variety of artifact mounts for one year with optional extensions. The Museum is undergoing a major renovation and is redoing all of its exhibitions. You will be working at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly VA with a dynamic group of exhibit fabricators, designers, project managers, exhibit teams, and exhibit contractors to help the Museum re-envision its visitor experience. Duties - Survey, measure, document, and create mount structures that conform to exhibit design intent, as well as NASM standards for safe object display. - Use materials provided to create mounts that conform to the Transformation Mount Catalog and NASM designated mount styles. - Review drawings and submittal documents, measure artifacts, verify case layouts, and review specifications. - Schedule and coordinate with Conservation and other relevant departments to access objects for survey and mount fitting. - Update the Object Mount database with relevant drawings, measurements and survey notes as it pertains to assigned objects. - Maintain workspace along with any assigned tools and materials. - Install artifact mounts into gallery space in coordination with exhibit component and artifact delivery and the National Mall Building.

Qualifications - Degree or work experience in a museum or related field as it pertains to artifact mount-making. - Five or more years’ experience in fabricating museum quality artifact mount-making in various metals, acrylic, wood and fabric. - Relevant skills in welding, router and laser table operation, 3D modeling and additive printing skills. - Adobe Creative Cloud knowledge. - Microsoft Office Suite. - Ability to manage personal workload. - Critical attention to detail. - Ability to work with a diverse group of people.

Location This job will be located at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center at 14390 Air and Space Museum Pkwy, Chantilly, VA 20151. You will be required to perform installation activities and the National Air and Space Museum National Mall Building at 6th and Independence Avenue, SW, Washington, DC 20560. Other work activities may include visits to the Paul E. Garber Facility, 3904 Old Silver Hill Road, Suitland, MD 20746.


Government Furnished Equipment You shall be provided access to a computer workstation and relevant software for performing the work. You shall be provided tools, equipment access and materials for the fabrication of artifact mounts.

Payment You will submit invoices for completed work on a monthly basis. Invoices will include the quantity of worked hours and a brief description of the services provided. You are responsible for developing your own pricing information. You will be requested to provide an hourly rate for the base period of 1 (one) year and 2 optional 6-month terms based on services rendered as Not to Exceed (NTE) 1860 hours per year for the base period of 1 year, and 930 per each 6-month term. The hourly rate invoiced will remain the same throughout the contract period, regardless of the type of work performed.
