The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures furthers the understanding, celebration, and preservation of cinema through inclusive and accessible exhibitions, screenings, programs, initiatives, and collections. Welcoming visitors from Los Angeles and around the world, the Museum works in active partnership with motion picture artists and specialists, scholars, staff, and diverse communities to contextualize and challenge dominant narratives around cinema, inspiring discourse, connection, joy, and discovery.
Reporting to the SVP of Exhibition Design and Production, the Exhibition Lighting Design Manager will be responsible for overseeing lighting for the entire museum building. You will also work closely with the Exhibition Production, Events, Theater, and Building Operations departments to produce lighting designs and executions for all scheduled events.

You Will:



Create & implement lighting designs in tandem with our Curatorial, exhibition design and fabrication teams.
Interpret creative vision into the lighting design aligned to the accepted museum standards.
Coordinate with theater management for the ongoing maintenance and operation of lighting systems and equipment in the theaters.
Spec, QC and oversee installation of lighting equipment for the galleries, theaters, and events spaces, and other the public areas of the building.
Maintain lighting in Exhibit galleries, including focus, color, lamps, and controls.
Maintain, troubleshoot equipment, supplies, and systems for museum lighting.
Build and test prototypes or proofs-of-concept for exhibits and displays.
Communicate and collaborate effectively with external designers, exhibit technicians, and other staff to follow established protocols, particularly when working with or around collections.
Troubleshoot complex systems and solve problems.
Update inventory and organize storage spaces for lighting.
Advise on maintenance and capital expense budgets related to lighting.
Hire and manage temporary lighting technicians for exhibition installations and special events.
Maintain drawings and paperwork for exhibit space and theatrical lighting.
Maintain and advance a strong working knowledge of current lighting technologies, including attendance of lighting and technology conventions, seminars, webinars, and reading trade publications.
Ensure that all work is performed in a safe manner in accordance with museum requirements, Cal-OSHA, OSHA, and other appropriate governing bodies.


You Have:



A bachelor’s degree in a lighting-related field (or demonstrated lighting experience).
3+ years’ experience in gallery, events, theaters and building operations lighting, demonstrating knowledge of lighting equipment, methods, practices, and safety precautions.
Proficiency in ETC architectural control products including Mosaic and Paradigm.
Proficiency with museum and theatrical lighting equipment (e.g., track lighting systems, PAR cans, ellipsoidal, filters, gobos, lenses, dimming systems).
Proficiency with ETC Gio and Ion Xe lighting consoles.
Ability to trouble shoot and maintain lighting systems.
Competency in reading blueprints, electrical drawings, light plots and Lightwright documents.
Excellent verbal, organizational, writing, and collaborative skills.
Self-motivation, with excellent time management skills.
Proficiency in Vectorworks, MS Office including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat, and Adobe Photoshop. Familiarity with CAD is a plus.
Basic electronic and electrical skills (e.g., soldering, wiring, testing cables and electronic components).
Comfort working with: Scissor lifts, boom lift, ladders, electrical and electronic tools and equipment, carpentry tools and equipment, metal shop tools and equipment, paint shop tools and equipment.
Ability to lift to 50lbs on occasion, operate aerial lift equipment and climb ladders up to 12’ high.
