This position reports to either a Senior Preparator or Associate Preparator, in the Exhibitions Department.

Assists with all aspects of gallery buildout and art installation work related to the general implementation of exhibitions, gallery reinstallations, rotations and installations in programmed spaces across the museum campus including but not limited to: art installation, crating and packing, matting and framing, drywall and build-out, painting, cabinetry, wiring and electrical work, lighting, installing graphics, and demolition. Assists with other projects throughout the Exhibition and Collection Services department and the Museum Campus as needed. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:


Assists with the planning, coordination and implementation of all preparation-related activities including but not limited to: art installation, crating and packing, matting and framing, drywall and build-out, painting, cabinetry, wiring and electrical work, lighting, installing graphics, and demolition for all exhibitions, gallery reinstallations, rotations and installations in programmed spaces across the Museum campus. Serves as project lead for assigned exhibitions and/or rotations as needed.
Assists with wall installation, gallery patching and painting, gallery maintenance, fabricating, modifying and maintaining exhibition cabinetry and pedestals and other build-out activities in preparation for an exhibition or installation. Must be able to interpret production drawings and specifications of exhibition components.
Assists with the coordination and oversight of outside contractors working on art installations, build-out, painting, lighting, demolition and other preparation-related activities. Assists the Senior Preparators and Associate Preparators as well as the Associate Director of Preparation and the Associate Director of Production to ensure contractor work is within specification. Assists with managing and escorting contractors while they are on DAM premises and coordinates their access and necessary paperwork with Protective and Facilities Services.
Assists in securing estimates, ordering, and arranging delivery or pickup, and processing invoices for preparation related services, supplies and materials.
Assists with maintaining inventory, packing, storage, movement and maintenance of Museums stock of exhibition furniture, cabinetry, and related props.
Assists with other Exhibitions and Collections Services departments including Collections Management, Registrar, CATS, and Photography on various tasks and projects as needed.
Assists with casework fabrication for assigned projects and ensures that contractors and fabricators follow DAMs standardized casework philosophy and ensures staff, contractors and designers are familiar with this document and all guidelines within. Works closely with the project manager, designers, and fabricators in review of buildout, casework, and platform designs. Works with Associate Director of Exhibition Production for sign off on all final fabrication drawings.
Assists with exhibition lighting needs and burnout replacements for all gallery spaces throughout the complex as needed.
Trains and directs part-time preparation assistants as needed.
Consistent usage of the Racial Equity Lens in day-to-day operations
Yearly goal setting to support Racial Equity Roadmap initiatives

Pay: The hiring range for the position is $23.17-$26.44 per hour based on experience.
