PACCIN and AIC have been working together to provide the next addition of the Art in Transit 2.0 project. This joint program of two webinars and an optional workshop will focus on the theory and practice of crating museum collections for transit. This 2-part webinar series is meant for emerging preparators, as well as crate designers, registrars, conservators, and other museum professionals who would gain practical knowledge and experience with packing. The workshop comprises two online sessions that will take place before an optional in-person workshop at the pre-session of the AIC Annual Meeting in Minneapolis, MN.
To register for the webinars-only, go here (https://learning.culturalheritage.org/products/crating-101-online-only).
AIC & FAIC Learning: Crating 101 Online Only ($120/person)
Webinar #1, April 30th, 1- 4:30 PM EST
Taught by conservators, conservation scientists and engineers and will familiarize participants with how the risk assessment of heritage materials being considered for packaging and crating can be improved by understanding important tangible properties
Webinar #2, May 7th, 1 4:30 PM EST
PACCIN staff will provide practical approaches to packing 2D and 3D artwork into crates using inner components and foam design. The primary pre-requisite reading will be your CCI Technical Bulletin 34 along with manufacturers data for common packing foams.
Workshop, May 28th, 9-5 PM (Limited to 20 people)
This on-site workshop will be held at the Walker Art Center and involve working in 5-member teams to pack 2D and 3D objects; determine proper dynamic cushioning and installing foam into the crates. Once packed, the crates will go through a series of tests for shock and vibration with monitors so that the collected data can be shared at the end of the workshop. To attend the workshop, one must attend both online webinars as a prerequisite.
To register the webinars and workshop package, you need to register for the
- Single Day (Pre-Meeting) ($50/person)
and then register for
- Crating 101 Workshop + Webinar package ($285/person).
The total cost for the webinars + workshop if you are not attending AIC is $335/person.
The best way to do the workshop + webinar registration is to call AIC: 202.452.9545 - otherwise there is some risk that you will register for the conference and then not be able to register for the workshop (if it is full). If you do end up registered for the conference, but are not able to get into the workshop, you have a week to request for a refund of the $50 conference fee. Obviously, it is better to call them and do everything in one go.
You DO NOT have to be a member of AIC in order to attend the workshop and webinars. We look forward to seeing some of our PACCIN members at this workshop!
