National Museum of American Jewish History
Exhibition Technician
The National Museum of American Jewish History seeks a contract Exhibition Technician to join its exhibitions and collections department. Reporting to the Director of Exhibitions and Collections, the Exhibition Technician works independently and as part of a team to maintain the Museum’s 25,000 square foot core exhibition and interactives. The Exhibition Technician will also assist with the installation and maintenance of temporary exhibitions. More information about the Museum is available at www.nmajh.org (http://www.nmajh.org/).
Responsibilities
General exhibit maintenance including repair and replacement of exhibit components and basic gallery upkeep. Tasks may include woodworking, wiring, painting, lighting maintenance, and graphics assembly, repairing interactives, cleaning, etc
Adjustment and repair of exhibit installations as required, including artifact mounting, casework, graphics/text panels, exhibit and gallery lighting, multimedia displays, and mechanical and computer-based interactive
Preparation of objects for display, including designing and fabricating object mounts as well as matting and framing 2-dimensional works
Assist with the installation and deinstallation of artifacts and labels in core exhibition
Work with the temporary exhibition team to coordinate the installation/deinstallation of temporary exhibitions
Work closely with the Museum’s engineering and building operations departments
Other tasks and duties as assigned by supervisor, manager or director
This is a contract, part-time position. Applicants should expect to work two full days per week, one of which will always be Monday, as well as additional days as needed.
Qualifications and Experience
2-4 years of previous technical experience in a museum or gallery setting
Electrical experience
Experience in carpentry and safe handling of power tools
Artifact handling skills
Ability to read architectural plans, specifications and diagrams
Basic knowledge of museum best practices
Ability to work some evenings
Detail oriented
Ability to lift 50lbs
Ability to work independently and as a part of a team
Ability to handle multiple projects and deadlines
Familiarity with PC computer systems and software
Cheerful and enthusiastic problem solver
Must be able to understand and carry out specific tasks and instructions, but also willing to collaborate and make suggestions to solve problems
