Position Title
Exhibits Preparator

Job Summary
The Exhibits Preparator is responsible for object and gallery preparation, as well as installation, de-installation and maintenance of museum exhibits. The Exhibits Preparator works with the Exhibits Designer and Curator of Exhibitions & Collections in all aspects of exhibit production.

Responsibilities and Tasks


Install and de-install exhibits at the Museum and in the field
Work with Registrar to prepare museum objects for exhibit
Work with Exhibits Designer to produce, install and maintain exhibit signage/graphics
Work with Exhibits Designer regarding production elements including measurements, materials, fabrication methods and lighting for exhibits
Conduct weekly gallery checks for lighting, maintenance, and repairs
Fabricate exhibit furniture and props, and perform carpentry for exhibits such as demolition, wall repair, painting, fabric wrapping
Interpret basic architectural blueprints and shop drawings to figure construction detail
Maintain Exhibit work areas and select and order materials and supplies within budget parameters laid out by Curator of Exhibitions & Collections
Ensure safe work practices in Exhibit work areas
Works with the Curator of Exhibitions & Collections and Exhibits Designer to help coordinate the planning/production of temporary and permanent exhibits
Must be able to work flexible hours (weekends and nights) when needed

Exhibit installations and de-installations 30%
Exhibit fabrication 40%
Exhibit production 20%
Exhibit maintenance and repair 10%

Qualifications


Bachelor degree in related field preferred
Two years previous experience with exhibition installation techniques, mount making and framing
Knowledge of proper handling and care of museum objects
Knowledge of graphics production such as vinyl lettering, and gallery lighting
Knowledge of basic carpentry tools and machinery and an understanding of the practices of museum exhibit construction and finishing
Knowledge of mountmaking techniques and materials
Knowledge of audio-visual museum components
Experience working creatively within a budget
Ability to read and work from sketches, shop drawings and/or architectural renderings
Ability to organize and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines and manage multiple projects concurrently under the pressure of deadlines
Effective written and verbal communications skills
Facility with MS office suite, including Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and Outlook, as well as graphics programs such as Vector
Oregon Driver’s License (or current state Driver's License and ability to obtain Oregon Driver's License) and clean driving record
Ability to drive rental trucks up to 26’ with trailer preferred
