The Cleveland Museum of Art is currently accepting applications for the position of Packing Specialist. This highly skilled and organized individual primarily prepares and packs works of art for shipment and unpacks incoming art work. S/he will work closely with the Collections Management and Conservation staff to coordinate packing of outgoing/incoming artwork and works associated with temporary exhibitions and assist with art movement as needed. In addition, the Packing Specialist is responsible for ordering and maintaining supplies related to packing and crate construction. This individual will also courier works of art as needed, assist curators, installation crew, and engineers when needed, supervise loading of crates and/or objects in trucks for transport, and develop and maintain good working relationships with other museum professionals and museum business contacts.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:BA or BFA degree required; two to four years experience and/or training in basic carpentry, crate-making and art handling; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

SPECIAL SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE:Employee must possess a valid driver’s license. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions and requests from supervisors and museum staff. Basic mathematical skills needed to determine measurements and proportions for packing, hanging, and displaying works of art. Must be computer literate. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization may exist. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in various forms. Ability to provide sound time estimates for completion of assigned tasks. Ability to read scaled, detail drawings or layouts and to work well under pressure to meet deadlines. Prior experience with power and manual woodworking tools, table and panel saws, hot glue gun, and sprayers, scaffolds, forklift, and other heavy equipment required. Painting and carpentry skills also required.
