Job Summary


The Exhibit Preparator assists with all aspects of planning, exhibit construction, and installation including graphics production. The incumbent must have a thorough knowledge of the practices and procedures inherent in the handling of works of art and artifacts. This position is located in the Collections Department of the Columbus Museum and is under the supervision of the Exhibit Design and Production Coordinator.

Major Duties


The main responsibilities of the Exhibit Preparator include but are not limited to:

Painting exhibition areas
Daily maintenance of exhibition areas
Assisting the art handler in the matting and framing of artworks and historical artifacts
Assisting the art handler in building mounts for exhibiting art and historical objects
Assisting in construction of walls, platforms and display cases
Assisting the art handler in lighting exhibition areas
Assisting the Exhibit Design and Production Coordinator on layout for labels and graphics
Working with registrar and art handler in the installation of artworks or historical objects during exhibition gallery preparation
Installing graphics during exhibition installation
Collaborating with the Exhibit Design and Production Coordinator on project management and setting the schedule
Working with registrar and art handler in the transportation of artworks or historical objects to and from the museum, including heavy objects
Knowledge Required for the Position


Must be a team-oriented individual with enthusiasm for working with art and artifacts in museum exhibitions. The incumbent must have a thorough knowledge of the practices and procedures inherent in the handling of works of art and historical artifacts. Must be able to operate computer-based graphics equipment, have a working understanding of design software, and able to execute graphic elements with precision. Must be open to input from colleagues in developing design solutions. Must have an understanding of the process of exhibit design and production, including the ability to read shop drawings. The incumbent must be skilled in the operation of power and hand tools used in woodworking, must be skilled in light welding and working with foam core, Plexiglas, fabrics, paints and other finishes.

Professional: Experienced in handling art objects in a museum; previous experience painting walls, producing graphics using computers, applying vinyl lettering. Understanding of construction methods is very desirable, as is any experience matting, framing, or mount-making. Must be proficient with Macintosh computers and Adobe Creative Suite. Strong organizational skills and ability to handle multiple tasks under tight deadlines is essential. Strong typography skills, as well as the ability to scan and prepare artwork for museum publications.

Educational: B.F.A. or B.A. degree in related field is desirable.

Salary Range:
$27,000 to $29,000 with full benefits.
