Departmental Overview

The Phoebe A. Hearst Museum of Anthropology, formerly the Lowie Museum of Anthropology, was founded in 1901. Its major patron, Phoebe Apperson Hearst, supported systematic collecting efforts by both archaeologists and ethnographers to provide the University of California with the materials for a museum to support a department of anthropology. Hearst hoped that the anthropology program at the University of California, the first anthropology department and museum established west of the Mississippi, would become a center for the discipline.

The Phoebe Hearst Museum has received funds to relocate a substantial portion of its ethnographic and archaeological collections from campus to its off-site storage facility in Richmond. The Sr. Museum Preparator’s role is critical in the organization and maintenance of collections during this large scale collections move (including selecting, packing, unpacking and shelving objects in their new location at the museum’s off-site storage facility). Working with the move Project Managers, Principal Museum Preparator and permanent museum staff, the incumbent will serve as a working leader for several Museum Preparators and will help organize and prepare collections in anticipation of the move, assist in the physical move as needed and in re-shelving the objects in their new location.
