POSITION TITLE
INSTALLATION ASSISTANT JOB CLASSIFICATION

POSITION PURPOSE:
Assist with art handling, staging, preparation and installation-related activities in conjunction with exhibitions, rotations, and other gallery changes throughout DAM Complex

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
• Assist with installation and dismantling of permanent and temporary exhibitions as well as gallery changes and rotations
• Safe handling, movement, installation, and storage of art objects
• Frame, unframe and install hanging hardware and backings on artwork.
• Assist in identifying and resolving potential installation problems and concerns
• Assist in planning and coordinating arrangements and preliminary setups and mockups related to installations
• Primarily responsible for data entry regarding art object location information pertaining to current exhibitions.
• Perform periodic and accurate inventory of temporary art staging areas
• Document installation and mockup activities for internal communication purposes using digital camera and scanner
• Assist various departments of Exhibitions and Collections Services as needed and/or when time permits including but not limited to gallery construction preparation, light, and label replacements, exhibition furniture construction and preparation, mount fabrication and fitting, and packing and unpacking artwork.

OTHER DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

• May supervise on-call employees, contractors and inter/volunteers as needed
• Provide art courier services
• Other duties as assigned

JOB QUALIFICATIONS
• Knowledge of art installation techniques for a variety of media and types of artwork
• Knowledge of accepted art handling requirements for small, large, and fragile art objects of all media types
• Knowledge of artwork conditioning standards
• Knowledge and experience in basic carpentry, safe woodworking, and metal working practices preferred
• Knowledge of artistic material and processes, as well as display and lighting techniques preferred
• Excellent communication skills and an ability to work collaboratively
• Quick and accurate computational skills needed to reach exact/precise measurements involved in installation assignments
• Good reasoning and problem solving abilities
• Ability to deal with multiple projects simultaneously
• Skilled use of frequently used hand tools and power equipment
• Ability to lift and control objects weighing 50 to 75 pounds
• Ability to drive trucks up to 20 feet in length
• Basic computer skills including working knowledge of word processing, database (ARGUS preferred), and spreadsheet programs

EDUCATION OR FORMAL TRAINING
• BA with major coursework in art history, studio art or related

EXPERIENCE
• Prior museum or gallery experience in art handling and exhibition installation
• Strong appreciation for fine art
• Working knowledge of ARGUS preferred

MATERIAL AND EQUIPMENT DIRECTLY USED

• Computer and ARGUS database
• Hand and power tools
• Art moving equipment including A-frame, carts, furniture dolly, pallet jack
• Lift equipment (forklift, rugger, stacker)
• Camera (35M, Polaroid, digital)
• Trucks and vans

WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES

• Museum, gallery, storage locations
• Temperature changes
• Exposed to hazards from electrical/mechanical/power equipment
• Subject to many interruptions
• Lifting, pushing or pulling more than 50 pounds
• Standing, walking, sitting, and climbing
• Eye/hand/foot coordination
