International Contemporary Art Gallery in New York is looking for a full-time Head Preparator/Art Handler for one of its two locations.
The Head Preparator works closely with and reports to the Registrar and is a key team member for the gallery’s ambitious schedule of exhibitions, fairs and special projects.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
Plan and manage the installation/de-installation of exhibitions, rotations, and individual works of art, coordinating schedules and details with the team
Supervise the installation and de-installation of all exhibition graphics, signage, and labels; wall construction and painting; lighting; display fixtures and mounts
Supervise outside contractors and designers as needed with an eye towards quality, accuracy, and time management
Coordinate with staff to execute proper packing, handling and transportation of artwork both locally and internationally.
Work directly with artists on site-specific installations
FABRICATION
Operate and maintain tools and equipment associated with woodworking, electrical, light construction, audio-visual, and computer displays
Provide estimates and schedules for construction of displays, cases, or pedestals as required
ADMINISTRATION/ORGANIZATION
Assists in the development of exhibition budgets
Prepare material estimates and schedules for new installation, gallery construction and display cases/pedestals as required
Oversee the hiring, training, scheduling and directing of art handler staff and freelancers
Organize department's short-term/long-term projects and set job assignments to meet the Gallery's deadlines and priorities
REQUIRED SKILLS
Five years of progressively responsible experience in exhibition planning and coordination, preparation, construction, design, and installation in a gallery or other art venue
Advanced knowledge of materials, fabrication techniques and construction processes
Knowledge of art preparation techniques, principles, and industry standards
Knowledge of art security, storage, shipping and receiving
Must be physically fit and possess a clean driver's license
Proficient in Mac computer programs
Exceptional interpersonal skills, with a strong problem solving ability and a structured approach
Strong organizational and delegating skills are a must
Must be able to multi-task and delegate responsibility as needed
Strong English communication skills, both written and oral, are required. Foreign language (German) skills are also encouraged
New York-based with strong art-related network is an advantage
Compensation is commensurate with experience.
