The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco is looking for a Manager of Installation & Preparation. Under the direction of the Deputy Director of Museums, the Manager of Installation and Preparation will manage the staff and operations of the Museums' Technical Support Department. In this capacity, s/he has primary responsibility for planning, managing, and implementing the fabrication, construction, and installation of exhibitions, including the construction of shipping crates, display cases, and object mounts as required; the preparation and painting of gallery space for exhibitions; and the preparation of objects to be exhibited. S/he works closely with staff in various departments including Design, Exhibitions, Curatorial, Conservation, and Registration in order to produce exhibits, install artworks in the permanent collection and special exhibition galleries, and help manage the permanent collections. The nature of the work requires strong technical abilities and excellent management skills. The successful candidate will have proven leadership capability.
Typical Duties and Responsibilities:
Plans, prioritizes, schedules, and manages the work of the Technical Support Department.
Hires regular and temporary staff; directs, supervises, and evaluates their work; assesses resource needs and determines staffing adjustments as required.
Collaborates with FAMSF staff and designers, artists, and staff from other institutions in planning for the design and construction of temporary and permanent exhibitions. Sets detailed production schedules, estimating time and cost involved and general procedures to be followed.
Consults with the Museums' staff with regard to art movement, storage, handling, mount-making, and installation. Oversees the construction of display furniture built to design and conservation standards for temporary exhibitions and temporary installations.
Supervises techniciansand temporary art installers in the preparation of artwork and the installation and de-installation of special exhibitions and permanent collection rotations. Manages and participates in the fabrication and installation of exhibits - including mat-cutting and framing for works of art; packing and unpacking of artworks; exhibition graphics, signage, and labels; wall construction and painting; lighting; and display fixtures and mounts - taking into account appropriate measures for earthquake mitigation and ADA requirements, while insuring the highest quality within available resources.
Develops, administers, and monitors the departmental budget, and assists in the development of exhibition budgets.
Develops departmental policies and procedures.
Manages the ongoing monitoring of the condition and appearance of permanent and temporary exhibit installations; identifies problem areas and recommends solutions; oversees the necessary repair/maintenance of exhibit installations or coordinates this work with other departments as required.
Oversees the maintenance and repair of tools and equipment; estimates costs of and purchases materials, equipment, and supplies. Ensures adherence to safe workplace practices and procedures in the operations of the Technical Support Department, including its workshop and the handling of art.
Manages the inventory of exhibition furniture and fixtures at all of the Museums' locations.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
Work Experience: 10 years of progressively responsible experience in the preparation, construction, and installation of exhibit displays OR an equivalent combination of training and experience. At least 2 years of supervisory and management experience OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Skills and Abilities:
Proven leadership skills. Knowledge of management principles, including supervision of staff; training practices; and policies and procedures.
Demonstrated successful experience in project management, including the ability to plan, supervise, motivate, evaluate, and lead staff.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Museum departments, staff, and representatives from other museums.
Ability to develop and manage budgets, prepare cost estimates, and make sound purchasing decisions.
Ability to meet changing and shifting priorities.
Knowledge of and experience in the design and construction of museum exhibits.
Ability to interpret working drawings and to develop and implement design concepts.
Computer proficiency with spreadsheet and CAD systems.
Knowledge of and skill in using the standard tools and equipment, practices, and methods utilized in painting, rough and finish carpentry, and cabinet work, as well as the use and application of different materials such as various kinds of lumber, fabrics, plastics, mechanical fasteners, and adhesives.
Knowledge of safety regulations, practices, and procedures.
Knowledge of art handling procedures for two- and three-dimensional art objects in a variety of materials, sizes, and weights, including the rigging and movement of art, mount-making principles, and lighting concepts.
Ability to explain and carry out methods and procedures relating to the handling of irreplaceable objects of art and art packing practices.
Must have a valid California Drivers License with a clean driving record. Must be able to drive a truck.
Must be able to lift 50 to 75 pounds and stand for long periods of time.
