The Menil Collection seeks a collections registrar to maintain permanent records of all artwork owned by the Menil Collection and assist in providing staff members with information on objects in the collection, as requested.
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, maintaining and updating object files in the collection with information provided by curatorial and conservation staff; providing assistance in generating lists relating to information about artworks in the collection; generating deeds of gifts for new accessions, and, maintaining location changes for artworks in the museum. The collections registrar handles quarterly internal audit requests from the Menil’s business office staff as well as yearly requests from auditors regarding accessioned and de-accessioned art. The collections registrar schedules visits of scholars and students to see artworks and provides them with information relating to these artworks. In collaboration with the TMS (The Museum System) administrator, the collections registrar assists in the clean-up and maintenance of data related to objects, loans, images, and exhibitions, and helps to develop and implement object cataloguing priorities and strategies. Provide assistance with outgoing loans of the permanent collection.
Job RequirementsRequired qualifications include a minimum of five years museum registration experience with hands-on knowledge of registration and collections management, conservation, object handling, maintenance, storage of collections, and outgoing loans. A bachelor’s degree in an art-related field, art history, or museum studies, required; MFA or MA, preferred. Applicant must have knowledge of TMS database software or other comparable database software, excellent organizational skills, and the ability to multitask. Ability to attend to detail in a timely manner is essential to this position as are excellent organizational, strong interpersonal skills and strong oral and written communication skills.
