Sheldon Museum and Cultural Center is seeking a collections intern for 2 to 3 months this coming summer. The intern will work under the direction of the Museum Director, a former collection manager, to research and catalog artifacts, art and archival material. There may be, depending on the interest and educational focus of the intern, exhibit and out-reach opportunities as well.
The museum began with the collection of one family and has become the community museum housing historical exhibits, historical archive and a growing collection of local art. The artifact collection contains items related to Tlingit (the local Native Alaskan group) culture and history and to the non-Native settlement of the area. The later topics include the Mission settlement, the gold rush, and the longest lasting gold rush Army Post in Alaska that is now in private hands.
There is no travel reimbursement but housing and a stipend will be provided.
Requirements:
Applicants must be enrolled in college or graduate school or a recent graduate, studying history, museum studies, American studies, or related field.
Some experience cataloging and working with artifacts.
Knowledge and experience with PastPerfect museum software is helpful but not mandatory.
A resume with cover letter and a list of 3 professional references are due by April 20, 2013. You can e-mail director@sheldonmuseum.netor mail to:
