DescriptionSenior Exhibitions Manager
Department: Visual Arts
Reports to: Director of Visual Arts
Status: Exempt
Work Schedule: Full time (37.5 hours/week), Monday through Friday,
Events/Installation evenings and weekends
Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (YBCA) is the contemporary arts center anchoring the arts district at 3rd and Mission in downtown San Francisco in the beautiful Yerba Buena Gardens. YBCA presents bold and innovative contemporary visual art exhibitions, performances, film/video screenings and community engagement programs that provoke dialogue on the vital issues of our time.
Principal Responsibilities
Manage and oversee all operational aspects of exhibition production, including planning, scheduling and budgeting.
Serve as the point-person in the Director’s absence to maintain smooth departmental operations, helping respond to requests, resolve issues, assist with decision-making.
Develop and manage exhibition plans and schedules, coordinating internal and external needs and communicating across departments.
Manage overall exhibit production workflow to ensure deadlines are met and communication facilitated across internal YBCA departments and external parties.
Supervise and manage workflow of the Exhibition Designer and Registrar.
Assist the Director of Visual Arts in preparing and maintaining budgets, and tracking expenses for exhibitions.
Serve as liaison between YBCA and presenting artists.
Direct and manage all aspects of traveling exhibitions — including successfully soliciting venues for participation, contract negotiation, marketing material development, etc.
Effectively represent YBCA and Visual Arts Department in cross-departmental meetings, and externally with vendors, artists.
Develop and negotiate contracts with artists, guest curators, and contractors.
Manage production of Visual Arts collateral materials, such as brochures and catalogues.
Minimum Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Visual Arts, Humanities, Art History or similar field of study or equivalent experience required. Master’s degree preferred.
Minimum 5 years exhibition management and supervisory experience in a museum, gallery or arts organization.
Demonstrated expertise in managing and coordinating all aspects of multiple complex projects.
Excellent interpersonal, negotiation and conflict management skills.
Ability to identify problems and resolve them quickly so that projects and teams can function smoothly.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to work effectively in partnership with people of diverse cultural backgrounds.
Familiarity with PC or Mac computer systems and software, including museum database and design software applications.
