Position Details
Job Summary:
Under general supervision of the Museum Director, and collaboratively with the Museum Curator, provide daily management of the exhibition space as well as long-term strategies to achieve the goals of the museum. Provide exhibition design, construction and installation of exhibitions and the display of objects. Responsible for the performance of technical, skilled preparatory work, graphic design and content development for environmental, print and media-based components, supervision of student interns, and contributing to publicity and fundraising for exhibitions.
Physical Demands:
Climb a ten-foot ladder to install lighting.
Safely lift museum walls and display props weighing up to 50 lbs.
Move boxes from floor to table and from vehicle to inside room weighing up to 50 lbs.
Work Environment:
Work occasional overtime including evenings and weekends to meet exhibition deadlines.
-Valid California Drivers License to transport museum exhibits.
Background Check Required:
This position is a critical position and subject to a background check. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of background investigation including criminal history and identity checks.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
-Knowledge of design aesthetics for 2 and 3-dimensional spaces.
-Experience designing a complete exhibition including: traffic flow, color choices, pedestal and case design, wall placements, mounting selection, exhibition graphics design and placement.
-Experience supervising the work of others to ensure completion of delegated work.
-Skills to perform basic carpentry skills, using woodshop and woodshop equipment to construct props and false walls.
Knowledge of alternative materials including plexi-glass, steel tubing, and PVC piping.
-Knowledge of methods to securely assemble and install structures, props, and one of a kind art work with consideration to the possibility of seismic activity.
-Knowledge of various lighting techniques and equipment to independently light exhibits.
-Skills to prepare and write publicity information, exhibition materials and maintain museum website.
Preferred Qualifications:
-Experience using a Macintosh computer and familiarity of OS X, Microsoft Word and design programs such as Adobe Creative Suite, Vectorworks, Sketch-up, Web authoring tools such as Dreamweaver.
