Job DescriptionThe Museum of the City of New York celebrates and interprets the city, educating the public about its distinctive character, especially its heritage of diversity, opportunity, and perpetual transformation. The Museum serves the people of New York and visitors from around the world through exhibitions, school and public programs, publications, and collections. The Museum is riding an exciting wave of success. Attendance is at an all time high and the institution is in the midst of a revitalization of its mission and operations, which centers on the modernization and expansion of its historic building and the reinvigoration of its exhibitions and public programs.
The Museum seeks to fill the position of Collections Manager . The Collections Manager will have the ability to coordinate and manage multiple, often complicated, concurrent projects; demonstrated attention to detail; the ability to develop, implement, and track project and departmental budgets; strong understanding of proper documentation for acquisitions, collections objects, loans, and other administrative functions; knowledge of appropriate care, handling, and storage for a wide range of formats.
RESPONSIBILITIES:


Manage the off-site storage facility, monitoring climate, conditions, and warehouse activity on a regular basis.
Monitor storage and gallery climate conditions on site and work with Facilities staff to maintain appropriate temperature and humidity levels.
Oversee all logistics for the shipment of collection objects locally, domestically, and internationally, including tracking all collections objects sent for conservation.
Work in concert with appropriate staff to contribute to the ongoing process of cataloguing and rehousing collection objects, including oversight of the purchase of supplies for collections care and management.
Facilitate the valuation of objects.
Facilitate all collections conservation, including oversight of budgets and payment of invoices.
Ensure appropriate cataloging, including at least a record image, for all collection objects proposed for installation or conservation.
Act as collection liaison for all in-house exhibitions.
Help make objects available to outside scholars and internal staff.


Job RequirementsREQUIREMENTS:
Education: Master’s degree in museum studies with a specialty in collections administration, or equivalent museum collections experience.
Experience: A minimum of five years of experience in an art or history museum is required, along with demonstrated knowledge of collections care and management.

Physical: The ability to lift up to 50 pounds
