Department: Visual Arts
Reports to: Senior Exhibitions Manager
Status: Exempt position
Work Schedule: Full time (37.5 hours/week), Monday through Friday,
Events/Installation evenings and weekends
Primary Responsibilities


Manage and oversee tracking, registration, care and handling of art objects including all loans, commissioned works and temporary projects
Responsible for registration and conservation of art work
Responsible for all aspects of shipping and receiving of artwork including administrative activities, arrangement for travel of works of art, condition reports and courier duties
In collaboration with the Exhibitions Designer and the Senior Preparator, provide on-site supervision and care of all works of art during installation and de-installation, and throughout the run of an exhibition
Manage all aspects of the shipment and care of objects for YBCA traveling exhibitions, including providing supervision of the mounting of YBCA exhibitions at other venues as needed
Document incoming and outgoing artwork presented at YBCA; arrange exhibition photo shoots with contract photographer
Responsible for all contracts with outside vendors related to registrarial projects including insurance policies and government certifications
Point person for other YBCA staff regarding events and activities that may affect exhibition objects
Support artists in the shipping of materials for the creation of works on-site
Responsible for maintenance of art storage areas, and securing off site professional art storage facilities when needed
Negotiate and execute repairs to artwork; notify owners and insurance carriers in case of damage
Support the Senior Preparator in maintaining exhibitions; open and close galleries for public viewing
Maintain inventory of materials and supplies for registration work
Manage exhibition and image archives
Work closely with the Exhibition Designer to assure the best results for the curatorial vision of a project
Supervise Assistant Registrar

Minimum Requirements


Bachelor’s degree in Visual Arts, Art History or equivalent experience required
Specific coursework in registrarial procedures preferred
4 years experience as Registrar or similar position in a museum, gallery or arts organization
Demonstrated knowledge of museum display techniques
Experience with art handling, storage, packing, crating and installation
Experience with museum object database systems (The Museum System preferred), PC or Mac computer systems and software
Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills
Excellent organizational skills, with particular attention to detail and capacity to effectively manage multiple tasks and deadlines
Ability to work effectively in partnership with people of diverse cultural backgrounds
Flexibility to work variable schedules, including days, evenings and weekends
Able to travel 15 to 20% of time
