*Associate Registrar – Changing/Traveling Exhibitions – full time*
PEM is a museum of international art and culture with a collection of
approximately 800,000 objects in diverse media. Its holdings of
contemporary and historic American, Asian, Maritime, Oceanic, Native
American, and African art and culture are among the finest of their kinds.
The Peabody Essex Museum is looking for an experienced, energetic,
resourceful, and collegial Associate Registrar with a focus on loans,
changing and traveling exhibitions. This position is within the Collection
Services Division, reports to the Head Registrar, and works closely with
the Curatorial, Conservation, Collection Management, Security and
Exhibition Planning Departments.
*The successful candidate will:*
Manage an exciting and diverse changing/traveling exhibitions program as
part of a team under Head Registrar’s direction. Create and manage
production of deliverables for assigned traveling / changing exhibitions
(loans, insurance, condition reports, packing, permits, international and
domestic shipping). Coordinate exhibition installation and deinstallation
schedules in concordance with courier, shipping and exhibition production
schedules.
Assist Head Registrar and Director of Exhibition Planning with support of
changing / traveling exhibition projects as directed. Collaborate
inter-departmentally with Collection Services and curatorial staff on
exhibition and loan projects.
Compile timely summaries of exhibition requirements for Exhibition
Planning, Curatorial, and Collection Services staff. Act as transportation
and/or installation courier for incoming loans and traveling exhibitions up
to eight weeks per year
Supervise an Assistant Registrar and interns for the successful completion
of tasks below as appropriate depending on stage of project(s):
- Manage production of original request letters in coordination with
curatorial departments and the tracking of requests. Provide timely
updates.
- Manage / prepare Loan Agreements and Certificates of Insurance
- Coordinate incoming and outgoing packing, shipping and courier
arrangements
- Manage production/prepare paperwork for installations and
deinstallations (crate and object tracking, condition reports, receipts,
documentation of packing, crate storage
- Receive trucks on Loading Dock – plan and oversee loading/unloading
*Qualifications/skills:*
Bachelor’s Degree in Art, Art History, Museum Studies or closely related
field required; completion of graduate program in Museum Studies preferred.
Five years of professional museum registration / collections management.
Art museum experience preferred. Three years experience in all aspects of
changing and traveling exhibitions from creating paperwork to storing empty
crates. First-hand experience and knowledge of regulations including CITES,
domestic and international U.S. Indemnity, Immunity from Seizure and
TSA/CCSF.
Thorough knowledge of best registration principles and practices for loans,
changing and traveling exhibitions. Strength and skill in handling, moving,
and packing fragile works of art required.
Strong interpersonal, planning, and organizational skills; excellent
written and oral communication skills. Ability to be successful in
team-oriented work environment.
