COLLECTIONS ASSISTANT- AH-TAH-THI-KI MUSEUM


NATURE OF WORK

The Collections Assistant will work in the Museum's Collections Division assisting Division staff with all aspects of collection management including cataloging, research, and preservation-related duties. This position also works on preventive conservation of the collection such as storing and numbering artifact and archival objects. This position reports to the Museum Collection Manager and is a non-exempt position.


ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

Catalogs historic objects, photographs, library materials, and archival materials into the Museum's permanent and non-accessioned collections using the Museum's Past Perfect collection management database.

Assists with the standardization and maintenance of catalog record information in the Museum's Past Perfect collection management database.

Conducts research on the provenance of historic objects for curatorial purposes.

Houses objects in appropriate acid-free storage materials for storage in accordance with the STOF AH-TAH-THI-KI Museum policies and procedures.

Provides appropriate object handling services and mentors museum staff to appropriately handle and move collection objects when necessary.

Undertakes administrative duties related to collections management projects as assigned.

Conducts archival and publication quality photography of collection objects as necessary.

Attends and contributes to staff meetings, workshops and related training.

Composes written reports and articles for Museum and Tribal publications as required.

Assists with the preparation and maintenance of exhibitions and displays and the delivery of activities and events sponsored by the Museum.

Performs other related duties as assigned.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES


* Familiarity with the guidelines and best-practices of museum collections management.
* Excellent organizational and writing skills.
* Proficiency in basic computing, including Microsoft Office software.
* Proficiency in current technologies, including desktop publishing, spreadsheets, and database management.
* Strong communication skills and ability to maintain effective working relationships.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES


* Analytical skills are needed when interpreting information.
* Capable of handling multiple projects and of seeing projects to a point of completion.
* Ability to work a flexible work schedule including evenings, weekends and holiday.
* Ability to travel when necessary.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor's degree in History, Museum Studies, Anthropology or a related field required. Master's degree preferred. Candidates who are in the process of obtaining a graduate level in related fields will be also be considered. Experience working in a curatorial setting is preferred. Strong organizational, communication and research skills are necessary, with the ability to prioritize workload and handle many tasks simultaneously. Proficient computer skills utilizing Microsoft software programs and add-ins are required. Must be able to work a flexible work schedule, including evenings, weekends and holidays. Must be able to travel when necessary.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Moderate physical activity. Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 25-40 pounds.
Ability to use tools and equipment, climb ladders/scaffolding, access platform and lift, carry exhibits, most of which are fragile. Must be able to stand for extended periods of time.


WORKING CONDITIONS

Works in a clean, air-conditioned office area, with little noise.
