The Virginia
Quilt Museum invites applications for the part-time (20-30 hours/week) position
of Curator/Registrar. The Museum has an
extensive collection of over 300 artifacts that celebrate and nurture
Virginia’s quilting heritage.
The Museum is
located in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley in the heart of downtown
Harrisonburg, Virginia. Housed in the
historic Warren-Sipe Home, the Virginia Quilt Museum is able to interpret not
only Virginia’s quilting heritage, but also the Civil War through the eyes of
women and those on the home front.
ESSENTIAL
DUTIES:
Responsible
for the preservation, documentation and management of over 300 objects in the
Virginia Quilt Museum collection. Work involves acquisition, registration,
cataloging, environmental control, loan processing, records computerization,
storage maintenance, arrangement and description, handling requests for
photographic reprints, and retrieving materials in response to research
requests.
Identifying
and contacting potential donors, conferring with Executive Director onprospective
donors, and working with the Board of Directors: Collections Committee.
Works under
the direction of the Executive Director.
Responsible
for the security of artifacts in museum collection and exhibit areas. Performs
daily walk through of exhibit and storage areas to check for security issues
including insect/pest presence, environmental concerns such as water leaks, and
Administrative maintenance of areas. Communicates
assessments to Museum Caretaker and Executive Director.
Prepares
facilities for upcoming traveling exhibits. Processes all necessary paperwork
related to the exhibits such as condition reports, damage reports,
correspondence with lenders, storage paperwork, etc.
Coordinates
with Museum Caretaker regarding the scheduling of volunteers to assist with
exhibit changes.
Works
closely with in-house exhibits and guest curators.
Compiles
historical information on collection objects or photographs for labels or
brochures.
Processes
Collection objects on loan to outside entities. Assures adherence to approved
procedures for check out of items. Processes proper paperwork.
Catalogues
museum objects using specified process, i.e. cleaning, producing description,
numbering object, photographing, processing identification tag, and ensuring
proper storage of object.
Maintains a
complete inventory of museum collection using computer database system.
Maintains
computer history of collection including check out dates and by whom, return
dates, condition of object, etc.
Prepares for
special events such as exhibit openings, programs, etc.
Assists in
training volunteers in the proper handling and cleaning of museum’s collection.
Performs
various museum clerical duties including typing, computer data entry, answering
telephone calls, scheduling museum programs, etc.
Using
excellent customer service skills, establishes and maintains effective working
relationships with other employees, officials, volunteers, and all members of
the general public.
Operates a
motor vehicle to assist in carrying out the business of the Museum.
Attendance
at work is an essential function of this position.
NON-ESSENTIAL
DUTIES:
Helps greet
visitors to the museum and directs their inquiries to the appropriate area.
May serve on
various community or employee committees as required and assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Successful completion of Background
Check
Collegiate educational background in
history, textile history, museum science or related field and at least one (1)
years of experience in a museum setting, or any equivalent combination of
education and experience. Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
Knowledge of
best practices, principles and methodology for museum registration and
collections care.
Must be
available to work a varied work week to include weekends, evenings and holidays
as required.
Ability to
effectively communicate verbally and in writing. Must possess excellent grammar
and composition capabilities.
Must possess
a high degree of proficiency in public relations skills.
Ability to
establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with co-workers,volunteers,
supervisor, and the public.
Ability to
follow verbal and or written instructions.
Ability to
work under stress and handle stressful situations.
Ability to
meet deadlines.
Experience using Microsoft Office, PastPerfect, calculator, copy and
fax machine, phone, motor vehicle, and various tools and hardware necessary for
museum installation (including painting, hammering, drilling, etc.).
PHYSICAL
DEMANDS:
The physical
demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an
employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.
While
performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk,
sit and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to use hands to
finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with
hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance;
stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
The employee must occasionally lift
and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job
include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth
perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
