The Chief Preparator is responsible for designing and directing installations of exhibitions and works of art. This position requires close collaboration with BAM/PFA's director, curators, artists, and staff. The Chief Preparator translates curators’ and artists’ concepts and visions into artistically designed, achievable, and affordable exhibition installations, and manages their implementation.
Responsibilities:
Designs, plans, and produces installation of exhibitions. Translates curatorial, educational, artistic, and other exhibition requirements into aesthetically pleasing and visitor-friendly permanent, temporary, or circulating exhibitions.
Develops complex installation designs for museum exhibitions, including architectural elements, display cases, framing, or other presentation styles. Analyzes gallery spaces, installation goals and the artworks to be presented.
Works within the constraints of budgets and applies knowledge of the physical and archival needs of the works.
With curators, designs structures and cases to display artworks safely without compromising their visual presentation, sometimes requiring specific microclimates, framing methods and styles, or armatures for stabilization of sculptures (including for earthquake protection).
Regularly identifies and solves complex design and installation problems that arise without precedent.
Develops renderings, three-dimensional scale models, mechanical drawings, lighting plans, and signage.
Ensures exhibitions and objects are installed in accordance with programmatic, archival, aesthetic, ADA, and other legal requirements.
Manages a detailed production schedule of all activity related to preparation and installation of artworks. Identifies and resolves workflow issues.
Administers budgets for exhibitions, ensuring that expenditures are within agreed-upon budgetary limits.
Directs support exhibition specialists, preparators, and other technical staff in the fabrication of components and the installation and disassembly of exhibitions, and in the regional transport, handling, and storage of artworks on loan and in the museum collection.
Identifies, recruits, trains, and schedules on-call preparator staff. Projects special staffing needs for individual exhibition support.
Serves as work lead to BAM/PFA preparators, on-call preparators, and others involved in developing exhibitions, transporting collections, and handling works of art. Provides training and schedules and assigns work. Provides feedback to supervisors.
Oversees outside contractors.

Expert knowledge of museum exhibition installation field.
Knowledge of the principles of conservation, security, and environmental controls, ADA requirements for public buildings, and awareness of visitor needs within the context of University policy and procedures.
Knowledge of exhibition production, related construction work, and preparation of artworks, which includes mounting, matting, framing, packing, transporting, archival storage, and safe use of chemicals.
Broad knowledge of technical equipment and variable media in terms of exhibition presentation and archival preservation.
Team leadership abilities with proven skills at creating, building, and maintaining a positive environment. Strong capability and affinity for working collaboratively with staff and across departments, including the Registration Department, Curatorial Department, Design Department, and exhibition artists. Highly skilled at working collaboratively and effectively with demands, desires, objectives, and institutional priorities of various stakeholders. Proven ability to troubleshoot, prioritize, and make difficult decisions.
Ability to translate a curator's artistic and/or educational vision into an aesthetically pleasing exhibit that meets the artists', public's, and safety needs.
Familiarity with design software; project management skills.
Bachelors degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training
