JOB OPENING ANNOUNCEMENT
Chief Preparator, Vero Beach Museum of Art
JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Chief Preparator has primary responsibility for the installation/de-installation of exhibitions, packing and crating, archival matting and framing, management of the carpentry shop, and all matters pertaining to the safe handling of objects in the collection and on loan to the Museum.
Responsibilities Include:
1.Installation of exhibitions including mounts, cases, exhibit components, video installations, furniture, educational interactives, and exhibition graphics such as vinyl lettering and text panels
2. Design and implementation of gallery lighting
3.Use of computer design software to aid in exhibition design process
4.Fabrication of exhibition furniture and oversight/scheduling of gallery wall construction and painting
5.Packing and unpacking crates
6.Archival matting and framing
7. Packing and transportation of artwork in local area, including driving transportation vans/trucks
8.Researching material sources, procuring materials, monitoring inventories of materials and supplies
9. Maintenance of shop machinery and tools and providing safety training and instruction to employees for their use.
Qualifications: BA in art, art history or related field. A minimum of five (5) years of experience preparing museum exhibits and a proven understanding of proper art handling and maintenance of museum objects, including two (2) years of management and supervisory experience. Excellent planning and organizational skills, attention to detail and the ability to work as a member of a team in a fast paced environment. Ability to lift up to 50lbs. Broad computer knowledge is essential.
Functional Relationships: Reports to the Registrar and Curator of Collections and Exhibition. Supervises the Preparator and contract personnel as required.

The Museum recently completed an 22,000 square foot expansion that encompasses a Collections & Exhibitions Support wing and new gallery.
