Job DescriptionThe MIT List Visual Arts Center seeks an experienced permanent full time registrar/collections coordinator. This individual will be responsible for MIT's permanent collection of contemporary art (much of which is publicly sited on campus and lent to students, faculty, and staff) and an active program of temporary and touring exhibitions.
This person is responsible for the care, movement, storage, inventory, and records of MIT's permanent collection of 3,500+ artworks. Maintains paper and digital collection records and periodic inventories. With Director, reviews art loan requests from other institutions. Helps establish conservation priorities and arranges for treatment of works. Organizes and maintains photography, location and historical files for permanent collection works; responds to rights & reproduction and research requests.
Coordinates the shipping, framing, packing, and insurance for all artworks from the collection and on loan for exhibition. Monitors gallery and storage environmental conditions. Reviews facility reports and contracts of prospective venues. Creates pertinent temporary exhibitions records (loan forms, condition reports, receipts, checklists, etc.) aided by computer database (Embark Collections Manager). Advises Gallery Manager, in installation of art.

Job RequirementsThe successful applicant will be detail-oriented, flexible in thinking and problem solving, a team player with knowledge of standard museum registration methods, well-suited for a university art gallery environment with a small staff, who also is interested in working with artists on new projects. Master's degree preferred, with at least four years experience in art museum registration and temporary exhibition logistics, including the organization of international traveling exhibitions. Excellent computer and communications skills and familiarity with Embark Collections Manager and Embark Web Kiosk are also desired.
