Job DescriptionOverview:
The Director of Collections is responsible for the management, leadership, and oversight of the Collections and Curatorial departments at one of North America's leading museums of anthropology. The Director will serve as an advocate for the appropriate use, acquisition, preservation, deaccessioning and management of the museum's artifacts to drive new and repeat visitation. Tasks include managing the collections and curatorial staff, research, providing support for the exhibition program, and developing innovative approaches to improving stewardship of collections, including the development of an artifact acquisition account.
Essential Responsibilities:
1. The Director of Collections conducts research to strategically identify new topics, trends, collections and items that may be acquired or borrowed for exhibition. Leads Collections staff in research and development to identify and potentially acquire or borrow compelling and iconic objects with stories that anticipate, complement and inform museum exhibits, programs and projects and have the potential to positively impact visitation.
2. The Director will collaborate with the Education and Exhibition departments to ensure accurate interpretative use of objects in appropriate, unique ways throughout museum exhibits, experiences and programs.
3. The Director will acquire new objects that align with strategic plans, vision and trends in the world of museums/collections. He or she will also deaccession objects that no longer align with the museum's mission and collecting strategies.
4. The Director sets the direction for use, management and care of collections to ensure it is compatible with the overall strategic direction of the museum; develops a strategic plan for collections and sets annual goals; develops an effective annual operating budget and plan; monitors progress of strategic plan, annual goals and operating financial plan; ensures the museum has an effective collections management plan and implements the plan to ensure the museum's collections remain relevant and current.
5. The Director takes a lead role with development staff to seek funding for acquiring and borrowing objects, for artifact collections and care-related projects, materials, adjunct staffing and equipment; manages object donor stewardship and implements recognition procedures for object donors. Creates and leads networking opportunities and events with collectors by collaborating with the development department.
6. Works with the Chief Operating Officer to direct and determine overall collecting, borrowing, deaccessioning, interpreting and display plans aligned with SDMoM strategic initiatives.
7. Works with the museum's exhibit program to ensure objects play a vital role in the development of these experiences; conducts research to identify, acquire or borrow compelling pieces to include in exhibits and recommends topics and collections that could drive the creation of new exhibits.
8. Creates and oversees an aggressive plan to digitize and share the museum's collection on-line; helps to plan, organize and implement virtual exhibitions that will appeal to a broad audience.
9. Serves on exhibit development teams based on field of expertise and as needed. Develops concept documents for new projects that are based in whole or part on areas of excellence or iconic artifacts from the museum's collection.
10. Oversees artifact acquisition budget for purchase and loans; strategically determines how to spend acquisition funds to support future museum projects.
11. Represents the museum before professional museum organizations and maintains liaisons in the field. Develops and expands new relationships with leading, cutting edge museums, non-profit and for-profit organizations. Shares research, scholarship and information via professional presentations.
Job RequirementsRequirements:
1. Master's degree in Museum Studies, Anthropology, or any field of study directly related to the museum's collections. A Ph.D. is preferred. Extensive experience may substitute for academic qualifications
2. A minimum of 5 years’ experience in collections management within a progressive museum setting. Must possess sound knowledge of museum practices including a depth of understanding regarding the management of collections as well as the curatorial role for field of expertise.
3. Demands the ability to work with and manage a diverse professional staff and the skills to negotiate effectively with both peers and staff.
4. Must be highly effective in team dynamics. Must have prior leadership experience for a professional staff and have the skills to mentor direct reporting staff.
5. Must possess excellent organizational, interpersonal, communications and problem-solving skills. Demands sound strategic thinking and planning skills.
6. Proficient technology skills, including word processing, database management, collections management and reporting programs.
7. Extensive knowledge and experience in an area of curatorial expertise is preferred. It may relate directly to Human Evolution, Egyptology, Mesoamerican Studies, Archaeology, Cultural Anthropology, Physical Anthropology, or consist of broader experience working with objects or specimens that are relevant to the stories SDMoM wishes to tell.
