Harvard University is currently looking for an Installer (Museum Installer/Art Handler):
Duties & Responsibilities
This is a term position ending on December 31, 2014
Roles & Responsibilities:
Installs exhibitions in-house and throughout campus.
Handles and moves art for exhibition, study, conservation, photography, and transport.
Prepares artwork for exhibition and storage, re framing, glazing, building storage and handling mounts.
Fabricates and paints display fixtures. Prepares galleries with paint touch-up, prepares and paints pedestals, cases, and other gallery fixtures.
Lights galleries to museum standards.
Secures and alarms art objects.
Maintains galleries, dusting exposed art and pedestals, cleaning Plexiglas, and re-lamping.
Packs, unpacks, and transports works of art around campus, and between museum sites.
Operates museum truck to transport supplies and artwork.
Works with contractors in storage and exhibition spaces.
Participates in the development of museum standards, safety and preservation of the collections. Performs related duties as required.
Basic Qualifications
BFA in studio art or design, or equivalent related work experience preferred; 3 years’ exhibition installation experience, preferably in an art museum or gallery; experience with handling and installing a variety of art objects; experience with gallery preparation; woodworking skills; mechanical ability and shop experience essential. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. comfortably. Basic computer skills required, using databases, Outlook email, Internet searches, Excel. Knowledge of Photoshop and CAD programs, A/V installations, and mount making, helpful.
Additional Qualifications
Ability to communicate effectively; carry out instructions precisely; work well under pressure and meet deadlines; excellent teamwork skills. Typical work involves walking, standing, stooping, pushing, and pulling; must be able to reach and work above the shoulders, climb ladders, lift, kneel, twist, and squat. Must be able to safely operate typical shop equipment, which includes: table saw or power miter saw, band saw, drill press, air compressor. Must have a valid Massachusetts driver’s license and be able to acquire a DOT medical card.
