The J. Paul Getty Museum is seeking a Chief Registrar to direct the Museum’s Registrar’s Offices at the Getty Center and the Getty Villa. Reporting to the Associate Director for Collections, the Chief Registrar oversees tracking of the collection as well as the registration, lending and borrowing of the collection. The Registrar oversees rights to the collection and ensures that the highest standards in the handling of objects are followed while overseeing arrangements for lending, borrowing, packing, shipping, securing, importing, exporting, and insuring works in, and loans to and from the collection.
The successful candidate will have at least a Bachelor’s degree in art history or a related field, but preferrably a Master’s degree in art history, museum studies or a related field; a minimum of 10 years experience in museum registration/collections management, including substantial supervisory experience; comprehensive knowledge of the best practices in fine art collections and rights management, registration methods, special exhibitions and loan administration, fine arts insurance/indemnity and art shipping methods; knowledge of current issues relating to provenance and repatriation of art and import/export laws as they pertain to art and an understanding of copyright law.

Oversees acquisitions, accessioning and deaccessioning in the Registrar’s Office including reviewing and signing-off on art acquisition proposals, purchase contracts, deeds of gifts and deaccessioning proposals.
Oversees art loan negotiations and approves loan contracts.
Oversees exhibition planning, budgeting and scheduling for art shipping, escorts, security and insurance/indemnity for special exhibitions.
Oversees the use of the collections information system (TMS) for collections management and the drafting and implementation of collections management policies and procedures.
Oversees the collection’s portfolio of rights, negotiations for rights and permissions with rights holders and lenders, the reproduction of collections by outside requesters and the reproduction of loans to the Getty and by the Getty.
Establishes departmental goals and priorities, manages departmental resources and provides guidance and direction to a staff of fourteen.
