Head of Art Handling
(Media Specialist III, pay band 4, position # 00105)
The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts seeks a passionate, detail-oriented individual to lead the Museum’s team of art handlers. Reporting to the Chief Registrar, this position will assign, oversee and participate in a variety of projects involving the movement, packing, installation and storage of irreplaceable works of art. Additionally, this position will train and mentor art handlers, establish and negotiate work priorities, assess staffing and organizational needs, contribute to the budget planning process, and perform a variety of routine administrative duties associated with the role of a supervisor. This position requires occasional weekend and evening work and some national and international travel.
Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have significant experience in art handling/preparation for a museum, gallery, university or similar environment. He/she will possess considerable knowledge of custom construction, fabrication, and installation methods, design and engineering techniques, and of handling, packing and storage practices related to exhibition, transportation and preservation of fine art objects. Additionally, he/she will have a working knowledge and some application of collections management practices coupled with some knowledge of art history and conservation principles and techniques. Considerable skill in the operation of hand and power fabrication tools and other material handling equipment is essential. Computer skills are also required. Additionally, the selected candidate must have experience managing/leading staff and/or projects and demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Good judgment, flexibility and strong organizational skills are also required. The selected candidate must pass a background security check.
Hiring Range: Salary will be determined based on qualifications and experience.
