The Menil Collection seeks a chief registrar to handle all aspects of collection management including maintaining the collection’s insurance policy, coordinating special exhibitions and outgoing loans, generating loan contracts, budgets and federal indemnity applications, supervising documentation and management of the permanent collection, and participating in steering digital initiatives at the museum.

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Coordinate movement of all artwork internally and externally. Develop and implement procedures for outgoing loans, accessioning, and de-accessioning; negotiate loan contracts; and perform courier services or appoint appropriate staff member to accompany artwork. Schedule and make arrangements for couriers accompanying artwork to the Menil for special exhibitions. Monitor legal and ethical implications and care standards pertaining to artwork (copyright, NAGPRA, immunity from seizure). Design and control storage areas. Maintain insurance for the collection, negotiate coverage and premiums with insurance brokers, and monitor risk management issues (security, disaster planning, and fire protection.) Work to maintain the Menil Collection’s status as a Certified Cargo Screening Facility. The chief registrar supervises a professional staff that includes associate registrar, collections registrar, TMS (The Museum System) administrator, rights and reproductions and digital asset management staff, and the head of art services.

Considered one of the most important privately assembled collections of the twentieth century, the Menil Collection houses approximately seventeen thousand paintings, sculptures, and prints, drawings, photographs, and rare books. Masterpieces from antiquity, Byzantium and the medieval period, the cultures of Africa, Oceania, and the American Pacific Northwest and the twentieth century, including significant surrealist holdings, are particularly well represented.
Required qualifications include a bachelor’s degree in an art-related field, art history, or museum studies; MFA or MA, preferred. Minimum ten years museum registration experience with hands-on knowledge of registration and collections management, conservation, object handling, maintenance, storage of collections, and outgoing loans. Applicant must have knowledge of TMS database software or other comparable database software, excellent organizational skills, and the ability to multitask. Ability to develop, manage, and track budgets is essential to this position as are excellent organizational, strong interpersonal skills and strong oral and written communication skills.
