The Santa Barbara Museum of Art presents internationally-recognized collections and exhibitions and a broad array of cultural and educational activities. The Collections Department has an immediate opening for an experienced mid-career Associate Registrar to support the Senior Registrar in the management of the department and in all aspects of collections care and registration, including permanent collection, acquisitions and deaccessions, incoming and outgoing loans, exhibitions, storage and handling/movement. SBMA is a leading west coast museum with major permanent collections in ancient, Asian, 19-20th century, contemporary art and photography, and is about to embark on an exciting major multi-year, multi-phase renovation that will transform all areas of the building including exhibition spaces art storage , and offices, and will necessitate the movement and rehousing of the entire collection.
This position requires a BA degree (preferably in Art History or Studio Art), and 8 – 10 years of full-time paid employment experience as a Registrar in an Art Museum. The best qualified candidate will have substantial experience organizing loans and exhibitions (including international and U.S. Indemnity coverage) knowledge of current practices, standards, and materials in registration, including art handling, packing/creating, insurance, U.S. Indemnity, customs and international regulations including Fish and Wildlife/CITES, and experience with a variety of collections including contemporary art. Hands-on experience and comfort handling art independently and as part of a team. Expertise with collection management systems (preferably TMS and Crystal Reports) is required, and an ability and willingness to travel domestically and internationally, as needed (inclusive of extended truck travel). Ability and initiative to manage projects independently as well as work collaboratively as part of a multi-department team. Flexibility and problem solving skills are essential. The position requires lifting up to 50 pounds intermittently and the ability sit and stand for extended periods of time.
