We have received sad news from Bryan Cain at Atthowe Fine Art Services:
"It is with great sadness that I inform you of the passing of Scott Atthowe, the founder of Atthowe Fine Art Services in Oakland, California. As many of you who count him as a colleague and friend know, he was one of the early pioneers of specialized art-handling and shipping in the 1970s. He built an incredible full-service business and was an important part of the San Francisco/Bay Area arts community. This alone is a wonderful achievement but he would leave us one other labor of love: Before retirement, he realized his dream to sell his company to its employees. With unwavering dedication to his values and a tenacious will to stay the course, he left his employees a wonderful, thriving business organized as a California Worker Owned Cooperative. His legacy of leadership and excellence has touched a great many people. I am endlessly grateful for his friendship and mentorship and I’m confident that I speak for all of us at Atthowe Fine Art Services when I say we are honored to carry his legacy into the future."
Scott was one of the founding fathers of PACCIN in 1990 and was a key member of our organization through the years including being a major supporter when we became an independent nonprofit ten years ago. He will be dearly missed.
