Salary: The budgeted hiring salary/target range for this position is $28.30 to $28.73 hourly with salary placement based on skills, knowledge, and experience.
The Project Cataloger, Digital Initiatives provides vital organizational support for the Hammer Museum's digital collections grant project, Hammer Online Collections, funded jointly by the Mellon Foundation and Perenchio Foundation. Working under the supervision of the Associate Director, Digital Initiatives and Project Manager, Digital Initiatives, the Project Cataloger plays an essential role in bringing the Hammer's five collections to a global audience through innovative platforms. The Project Cataloger coordinates copyright research, image licensing agreements, artwork photography, monitors timelines, and communicates effectively with both internal and external stakeholders. The Project Cataloger supports the continued maintenance of the Hammer's two digital management systems, TMS (The Museum System) and NetX, to ensure the quality and consistency of collections-related metadata and assets for publication to the Hammer Online Collections website. Working closely with communications and curatorial staff - particularly the Grunwald Center, the Hammer's oldest collection spanning 50,000 works on paper from the Renaissance to the present - the Project Cataloger will assist in coordinating a comprehensive review of the museum's collection metadata style and standards, as well as imaging and descriptive language practices. In this capacity, the Project Cataloger will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of these systems, uploading assets, inputting metadata, responding to staff and press inquiries, and providing support where needed.
The position will also be responsible for coordinating vendors in relation to ongoing collections photography at the museum and at offsite storage facilities. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, able to juggle multiple tasks, and passionate about bringing the museum's collections to our audiences. They are comfortable communicating with partners across the institution and translating technical ideas into plain language. They are curious and knowledgeable about museum metadata and photography standards.
